Niacin (Vitamin B-3) is an essential B-group vitamin necessary for good health. Like other B vitamins, niacin helps the body break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy. In addition, it plays a role in gland and liver function. Niacin is known for lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Niacin can raise HDL (good) cholesterol by more than 30 percent.
